Hintonburg

Vibe: Artsy, Bohemian, Up-and-Coming
Good for: Creative types, foodies, and anyone who loves a good gallery or craft shop
Hintonburg is like that one friend in your group who’s effortlessly cool but doesn’t need to shout about it. Used to be a working-class neighbourhood, but now it’s where creativity brews—literally, because there are a ton of roasters, craft breweries, and distilleries around.
You’ll find everything from historic architecture to pop-up galleries that make you feel like you’ve wandered into an art exhibit by accident. Food-wise, you’ve got to hit up Supply and Demand, a local hotspot known for its handmade pastas and fresh oysters.
Walking around, make sure to pop into the Hintorburg Public House, which, despite sounding like a library, serves amazing local beer and food that you didn’t know you were craving.
Pro tip: If you’re here on the second Thursday of the month, check out Parkdale Public Market. It’s this mash-up of local farmers, artisans, and food vendors, with live music thrown in for good measure.
Wellington West
– Media credit: wellington_west
Vibe: Treny, Urban, Community-Oriented
Good for: Boutique shoppers, coffee lovers, and fans of farmers’ markets
Wellington West feels like two neighbourhoods in one—you’ve got Wellington Village on one end and Little Italy over on Preston Street. It’s like getting two for the price of one with a short walk or bike ride in between.
The streets are lined with quirky little shops, boutiques, and more restaurants than you’d think could fit in such a compact area. It’s also home to some of the city’s most loyal chefs—people who are all about sourcing local, seasonal ingredients.
You can’t visit without trying Wellington Gastropub—the food here is somehow cosy and fancy at the same time, with the kind of desserts you don’t want to share (but really, you should). And then there’s the Great Canadian Theatre Company if you want to dip your toes in the city’s arts scene.
Pro tip: Wellington West hosts TASTE! Ottawa’s festival every fall, where chefs go all out with incredible dishes. If you’re a foodie (or pretending to be one), this is your moment!
Westboro

Vibe: Modern, Outdoor-Friendly, Upscale
Good for: Active families, outdoor enthusiasts, and anyone who loves a mix of hiking trails and chic shops
Westboro is for the outdoorsy folk since the Ottawa River is practically its backyard, so you’re never far from adventure. You can go paddleboarding in the summer, skiing in the winter, or hit the trails any time of year.
It’s got that easygoing vibe that somehow balances sleek, modern condos with mom-and-pop shops that have been around forever. Add in some killer restaurants and you’ll find it hard to leave. You’ve got dinner plans?
The WORKS Craft Burgers & Beer is a crowd favourite—it’s over the top in the best way possible, with burgers like you’ve only dreamed of. If you have kids—or feel like you could be one for an hour—head to Westboro Beach to unplug and catch a little zen!
Pro tip: Summer’s a great time to be here for Westfest, a free music and arts festival that takes over the streets. Block off your day for live performances, food trucks, and a totally fun community vibe.
Centretown
– Media credit: centretownottawa
Vibe: Bustling, Diverse, Central
Good for: Young professionals, city lovers, and fans of lively bars and restaurants
Centretown is Ottawa’s epicenter of cool—you’ve got the Parliament Buildings on one end, and then this stretch of awesomeness filled with shops, bars, and restaurants that’ll keep you busy for days. You can walk from historic landmarks to some of the classiest dining spots in town!
Worth noting: you’ll run into the Rideau Canal here, which is for skating in the winter and paddle boating in the summer. If you’re hungry, Fauna is one of those restaurants that takes the farm-to-table concept to the next level—unreasonably good!
If you’re looking for retail therapy, stroll through The Gifted Type, a shop that takes “kitschy school” to new heights with books, gifts, and gadgets you didn’t even know you needed. And don’t skip the Morning Owl coffee shop for your caffeine fix!
Pro tip: Centretown is where the action is during Canada Day celebrations. Parliament Hill brings the big fireworks and concerts, but you’re also just a short walk from some more low-key neighbourhood spots if you need a break from the crowds.
The Glebe
– Media credit: michaelbaronrealtor
Vibe: Charming, Walkable, Village-like Feel
Good for: Boutique browsers, brunch lovers, and families
The Glebe is kind of like Ottawa’s neighbourhood sweetheart—it’s super walkable, packed with heritage homes that make you wonder what they’re worth (spoiler: a lot!). You’ve also got Bank Street running through it as the main vein!
Furthermore, this place is known for its thriving independent businesses and its foodie scene. Plus, the nearby Lansdowne Park adds an extra layer with its events, market, and sports.
Speaking of Lansdowne, if you’re a sports fan, you’ve got to catch an Ottawa Redblacks game there or, better yet, take in one of the summer concerts. For eats, head to The Rowan, where they’ve perfected the art of simple yet luxurious fare.
Pro tip: If you’re feeling outdoorsy, stretch your legs with a walk along Patterson Creek Park. Also, the Great Glebe Garage Sale—held in May—is a larger-than-life block-party-meets-thrift-sale where you can find everything from pre-loved treasures to quirky knick-knacks.
Old Ottawa South
– Media credit: tobypike.realtor
Vibe: Historic, Quaint, Relaxed
Good for: History buffs, book lovers, and those who enjoy charming riverside strolls
Old Ottawa South is sandwiched between the Rideau Canal and the Rideau River, so you’ve got waterfront vibes all around. This area is all about community, and you feel it when you walk down Bank Street, which stretches through the neighbourhood.
Plus, the architecture here has a lot of early-20th-century charm, so it’s like stepping into a postcard from another time. One of the must-hit spots for foodies is The Belmont, where you can get everything from duck poutine to fun cocktails in an effortlessly cool spot.
For a bit of shopping, Black Squirrel Books is a no-brainer—it’s a used bookstore with a coffee shop, and you can easily lose hours here flipping through books. Then there’s the Mayfair Theatre, one of the oldest running cinemas in Canada!
Pro tip: If you’re in Old Ottawa South during the summer, make sure to rent a canoe or kayak and explore the Rideau River. It’s an underrated way to explore the area, and it’s way cooler than walking when it’s blazing hot outside.
New Edinburgh
– Media credit: therlgroup
Vibe: Quiet, Picturesque, Refined
Good for: Nature enthusiasts, retirees, and anyone in search of Ottawa’s calmer side
New Edinburgh is like the “hidden gem” of Ottawa’s neighbourhoods, even though it’s home to some of the city’s most iconic spots. This cosy area is tucked in beside the Rideau River and Rideau Hall, where the General hangs out (and yes, you can check it out!).
The whole neighbourhood has that historic vibe, with elegant heritage homes and leafy streets that make you feel like you’ve walked into a storybook. For food, you’ve got to make a beeline to The SconeWitch, where they serve sweet and savoury scones!
If the great outdoors is your thing, unwind with a stroll through Stanley Park. Its riverside trails are perfect for walkers, cyclists, and dogs who just want to splash around in the water.
Pro tip: Don’t skip Beechwood Cemetery, which might sound macabre, but it’s like a hidden history lesson. It’s Canada’s National Cemetery, and some of the country’s most interesting historical figures are buried here.
Little Italy
– Media credit: littleitalyottawa
Vibe: Cosy, Nostalgic, Flavourful
Good for: Italian food lovers, culture seekers, authentic local eats lovers
It’s called Little Italy, but don’t let the name fool you—it’s got a big personality. Stretching along Preston Street, this area is all about celebrating Italian culture in the best possible ways: food, gelato, and a tightly knit community vibe.
In recent years, it has also become an international food hub, with restaurants serving diverse options, from Thai to modern fusion. It’s where you’ll find bustling patios in the summer and, during the annual Italian Week, Ferraris lined up so perfectly here.
Obviously, you’re going to want pasta, and Giovanni’s Restaurant is the place to go. After eating, reward yourself with something sweet at Pasticceria Gelateria Italiana Ltd, where the gelato and pastries taste like a direct flight to Rome.
Pro tip: Italian Week in June is the best time to visit. There are parades, food, stalls, live music, and a lot of racing bikes and sports cars all over the neighbourhood. It’s a slice of Naples, right here in Ottawa.
ByWard Market
– Media credit: heidarbadsar
Vibe: Lively, Eclectic, Tourist-friendly
Good for: Nightlife lovers, foodies, visitors who want to dive into the city’s heart
ByWard Market is like Ottawa’s beating heart when it comes to culture, food, and just a good time overall. This area goes back to the 1820s, which makes it one of the oldest markets in Canada.
It’s got this great mix of historic charm with cobblestone streets and modern energy from the endless restaurants, bars, and shops. Your first stop has to be Play Food & Wine, a wine bar that serves tapas-style dishes (their pairings are on point, by the way!).
After you’ve eaten, the National Gallery of Canada is just a short walk away from here, and even if you don’t go in, stop by to see Maman, the giant spider sculpture that somehow isn’t terrifying. Also, don’t forget to grab a BeaverTail from one of the stands—it’s basically a rite of passage.
Pro tip: ByWard Market is at its best during Winterlude in February. The ice sculptures and outdoor fun around the market (paired with hot chocolate) make the cold 100% worth it. Oh, and don’t forget: the Rideau Canal Skateway is within walking distance!
Kanata
– Media credit: yuna.eunah
Vibe: Suburban, Family-oriented, Tech Hub
Good for: Families, tech-professionals, green space lovers
Kanata is like the little sibling of Ottawa’s neighbourhoods—growing fast, full of energy, and ready to prove itself. It’s largely a suburban area, but don’t let that fool you, since it’s also home to the tech industry (it’s called Silicon Valley of the North, believe it or not).
If you’re craving grub, Baton Rouge Grillhouse & Bar is a favourite spot for Kanata locals. For shoppers, Tanger Outlets is where you can hunt for deals, and if you’re into outdoor gear, SAIL is the place to stock up before heading into nearby outdoor parks.
Speaking of outdoor spaces, Wesley Clover Parks is just a stone’s throw away and ideal for some nature therapy—hiking trails, equestrian activities, and even outdoor concerts.
Pro tip: If you’re here during hockey season, head to the Canadian Tire Centre to catch an Ottawa Senators game. And if hockey isn’t your thing, the venue also hosts some of the biggest concerts and events in town, so there’s something for everyone.
