We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Reputation and Reviews - I chose shops with a proven track record of satisfied customers, positive online reviews, and strong word-of-mouth recommendations. Reputation speaks volumes when it comes to professional and reliable service.

Turnaround time - I looked for repair services that balance speed and quality, ensuring efficient solutions without cutting corners.

Transparency and Services - I chose shops known for their honesty, providing upfront pricing, clear repair plans, and straightforward communication throughout the process.

Customer-focused approach - Friendly, knowledgeable staff and a commitment to putting the customer first were essential. I selected businesses that listen to their clients’ concerns and make the repair process smooth and stress-free.

A wonky transmission is the auto world’s equivalent of a bad breakup—dreadful, messy, and painfully uncomfortable. It’s that dreaded repair that makes your wallet cry and your stress level soar faster than rush-hour traffic in Ottawa.

But don’t sweat it. If your transmission is on the verge of a meltdown (or has already thrown in the towel), I’ve got your back! I scoped Ottawa for its absolute best transmission repair shops.

These are places trusted by real car owners and ones that won’t leave you broke. So, buckle up and read on!

How much do transmission repairs cost in Ottawa?

In Ottawa, transmission repairs typically cost anywhere from $1,000 to $5,000, depending on the extent of the damage and the type of vehicle. This range usually covers parts, labor, and additional services like diagnostics or testing, with major rebuilds and replacements being on the higher end of the spectrum.

B&N Transmission has been around since 1977, and I can tell they’ve mastered the craft. They’re a one-stop shop for anything transmission-related—whether you need repairs, replacements, clutches, or even work on computerized AWD and 4WD systems.

One thing that got me was their insane turnaround times; they manage to get the job done faster than expected, but without cutting corners! Seriously, their attention to detail is something you don’t see everywhere.

Furthermore, they use state-of-the-art diagnostic tools for today’s complex transmissions and carry a hefty inventory of rebuilt transmission systems and parts. This probably explains their speed and reliability.

They’ve got a solid reputation, too! One previous client told me that they had car trouble after a repair, and B&N went above and beyond—they didn’t just take responsibility but arranged a tow and even gave them a loaner car, all under warranty.

The only nitpick is that they aren’t super active on social media, which would’ve been useful for promotions or updates.

Pros

  • Over 40 years of experience
  • Specializes in all transmission services
  • Fast turnaround times
  • Large inventory
  • Excellent customer service
  • Highly trained staff

Cons

  • Limited social media presence

Exceptional integrity and fairness

“B&N Transmission exceeded my expectations when I had my vehicle towed to their shop during the holiday season. Their team quickly diagnosed the issue, promptly ordered the necessary parts, and ensured the repairs were completed efficiently. Throughout each stage of the process, they demonstrated exceptional integrity and fairness.

I am incredibly grateful for my neighbour’s recommendation to B&N. My experience with B&N was refreshingly honest and professional. Since having my vehicle serviced there, I have confidently recommended their expertise to friends and family needing clutch and transmission repairs. Do yourself a favour and trust B&N with your car the next time you need a GOOD QUALITY, HONEST mechanic!”

Above-and-beyond customer service

“Louie and his crew go above and beyond! Excellent work, pricing and customer service. B and N Transmission is the only transmission shop in Ottawa and area that does it’s own rebuilding right at the shop! No farming out the rebuild, so you know it’s done right! Even when he’s busy, Louie finds a way to fit you in. If could give 6 stars I would. My 2014 Sierra drove and shifted much better than the day I bought it!!!”

Ontario Transmission is a pro when it comes to manual, automatic-overdrive, and four-wheel-drive transmissions, covering pretty much every make and model. It’s no surprise, though, since they’ve been the go-to spot for transmission repairs since 1957.

When I visited, their place was spotless and modern, and run by a bilingual team who were super friendly. The real kicker? Their workmanship is backed by a solid 1-year or 20,000 km warranty, which you can stretch if you want extra coverage.

And yeah, they’ve thought about the little conveniences, too. If you need a major repair, they’ll hook you up with free local towing and a shuttle service.

I’ve also chatted with some customers while I was there, and their stories totally matched the vibe. One guy said another mechanic recommended Ontario Transmission to him (a huge trust point), and his truck was up and running better than ever.

The only downside? Their website doesn’t really give you much to work with, so if you’ve got questions, you’ll need to call them or swing by their place.

Pros

  • Over 65 years of experience
  • Specialists in manual, automatic, and 4WD transmissions
  • Clean facility
  • Great communication
  • Free towing and shuttle service
  • 1 year/20,000 km warranty

Cons

  • Limited online presence and website info

Excellent dedication and service

“Manny and his team took care of a very clunky transmission I had in my 2018 GMC Savana. After Manny and his team worked on it,it drives beautifully! I appreciate all the time and attention they took and getting my van ready even working on the weekend so that I can continue with my own work. I really appreciate this top-notch service  by excellent transmission guys!”

Skilled in restoring vintage performance

“A quick note to show appreciation for the crew at Ontario Transmission on the great work they did recently on my nearly 40 year old Mercedes.  They changed all the seals and fixed a slip out of 4th gear…back to what a mid 80’s Merc should be.”

Mister Transmission is the place you can count on if your car’s acting up—they’re solid when it comes to pretty much any transmission type, whether it’s manual, automatic, or even those CVTs (continuously variable transmissions) that are getting more popular.

One cool thing about them is their advanced diagnostic tools. They don’t just jump to conclusions; they take the time to really figure out what’s wrong before recommending any fixes.

The best part? The diagnostic check is totally free! Plus, their nationwide warranty options are flexible and peace of mind.

Furthermore, I’ve heard from one customer who went in just for preventive maintenance, only to find out there wasn’t anything wrong after all.

Not only did that staff not charge them, but they were upfront about everything—no sneaky upsells or sketchy behaviour.

Are they perfect? Not exactly! There have been a few complaints about transmission quality here and there, but to their credit, the team seems pretty quick to fix things if something goes wrong.

Pros

  • Handles all transmission types
  • Free diagnostic check
  • Advanced diagnostic tools
  • Honest and transparent staff
  • Quick turnaround times
  • Nationwide flexible warranty options

Cons

  • Occasional concerns about transmission quality

Friendly and dedicated service

“I brought my 2015 Scion tC to them the end of last year and it’s been a rough battle trying to figure out what’s wrong with my transmission but both Kyle and Rob have been super friendly and helpful throughout each time I’ve had to bring it back, I have no complaints at all as I know my car isn’t a very popular model so I’m sure it hasn’t been easy but they’ve taken such good care of me and my car. As well the hold music is very upbeat and great to listen when needed.”

Honest and thorough diagnosis

“Extremely professional, honest and very friendly. Initially I thought I had an oil leak in my transmission and left my 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe XL for a few hours to be inspected. They found out that although it looks like a transmission oil leak, in fact,  it was the engine oil pressure switch issue. They could’ve charged me $200 just to look. They didn’t charge me a dime and recommended reliable general mechanics in town. The Best service!”

Jaimes Transmission & Automotive is a dependable spot for anything transmission-related in Ottawa. Whether you need repairs, rebuilds, or full replacements, this team has you covered with years of expertise backing them up.

By the way, the shop is run by Carlos Jaimes, and believe me, people rave about his work ethic and skill. With over 25 years of experience, Carlos can solve car issues that others can’t even identify, and many customers have attested to it!

One client even mentioned how he sorted out their car issue in under an hour, after other garages spent ages scratching their heads—talk about impressive!

Beyond transmission, they handle a wide range of services like clutch repairs, driveline maintenance, axle replacements, diagnostics, and even basic auto repairs.

However, if you need something done quickly, you might need to stop in yourself since their phone service can be a hit-or-miss. It’s something to keep in mind, especially because Jaimes and his team are often hands-on with repairs.

Timely and efficient service

“I had to get my light replaced on my Volkswagen so I called Jaimes Transmission. Considering how busy they are, they were able to get me an appointment asap! Santiago replaced my driver side tail light super quick and it works good as new! If you’re looking for a shop that treats cars as their own, call Jaimes Transmission !! Thank you Carlos and team :)”

Honest and trustworthy advice

“I had an appointment for a trans fluid and filter change on my 2016 Gt Mustang. After the technician checked the trans fluid I was advised that the car did not need to have the fluid replaced and suggested an appropriate interval. The honesty and integrity of this shop is very much appreciated.”
