5 A-List Sports Doctors in Ottawa That Can Speed Up Your Recovery

sports-doctors-in-ottawa
We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.
  • Certification and Experience: Firstly, we wanted to include doctors who are board-certified in sports medicine and have years of experience under their belt. Bonus points if they’re associated with a sports team.
  • Communication skills: We also assessed their communication skills to see if they do a good job of listening to their patients and clearly explaining complex medical issues.
  • Accessibility: Next, we checked how accessible they were to schedule an appointment with and if their clinic location was easy to reach.
  • Approach: Of course, we also had to check how they approach their treatment. Plus, if they also offer personalised treatments.
  • Value-for-money: Lastly, we checked if their prices were reasonable enough for the services they were offering.

I have a love-hate relationship with sports. On one hand, I love the physicality and the competitiveness of it. On the other hand, I’m not a fan of the potential injuries that can happen in a snap, especially in sports like basketball, football, etc.

As someone who grew up in Ontario playing sports in school or leisurely with friends, I’ve bumped into my fair share of injuries. Fortunately, I’m lucky enough to live in the capital where tons of A-list sports doctors reside.

These amazing doctors helped me bounce back from my injuries and I want you to experience the same type of recovery when you’re in the same situation.

So whether you’ve been spending too much time in Ottawa’s swimming pools or breaking ankles on the basketball court, you’ll find something for you here!

How much do sports doctors cost in Ottawa?

Sports doctors in Ottawa may charge anywhere from 70 CAD to 5,000 CAD. This depends on the type of injury being treated as well as the treatments required for the patient to properly recover.

Kalpesh Jadav instantly piqued our attention because of the clinic he’s associated with. It’s accredited by the Canadian Sports Centre of Ontario, plus they lend their services to national-level athletes—you know you’re in good hands!

As for Kalpesh himself, he has over 10 years of experience in the field as a physical therapist and has a Master of Science in Rehabilitation Science. His expertise includes dry needling, shock-wave therapy, acupuncture, concussion management and more.

We also interviewed some of his past patients and they highlighted how each of their sessions was detailed and everything he explained was easy to understand.

Our only gripe here is that the clinic itself (Downtown) is only operational on Monday and Tuesday. This means that it can be quite tricky to book an in-person session, especially if you don’t have too much free time during the week.

Pros

  • Offers both virtual and in-person consultations
  • Clinic features well-maintained and state-of-the-art facilities
  • Accredited by the Canadian Sports Centre of Ontario

Cons

  • The clinic is only open 2 days a week

Personable and professional

“Mark and his team have done an excellent job helping me with a knee injury. They always take the time to assess how I’m feeling, treat the area, and go through a program. Their service is personable and professional. I’d recommend Mark and his team to anyone!”

We’ve heard of Richard L. Penning through our friend who recently suffered from a knee injury and we were impressed to hear how big his impact was during the recovery period.

Upon closer look, we discovered that Penning focuses on manual therapy, which explains his efficiency in my friend’s injury. More particularly, he specialises in joint mobilizations, spinal and peripheral joint manipulations as well as soft-tissue mobilizations.

One of the things we love about Richard is that he understands sports and injuries as well. We discovered that he grew up playing hockey and has had his fair share of injuries so if anyone can relate to your situation, he’s the guy.

The only thing that could throw some people off about Richard is his relatively young career, given his less than 10 years of experience in the field. However, if you don’t associate tenure with experience, you’ll still find him quite knowledgeable and efficient as a physiotherapist.

Pros

  • Offers a warm and welcoming space
  • Offers a wide array of manual and manipulative therapy
  • Has a great understanding of sports and injuries

Cons

  • Relatively young career

I felt well taken care of

“I was very nervous going in for my first appointment, but my mind was so quickly put at ease. The atmosphere is very social and casual, without compromising professionalism.

I felt well taken care of throughout my months of physio, and never felt uncomfortable despite those initial fears. Really happy to recommend the experience!”

Never been anything short of amazing

“I have gone to see Richard for around 3-4 years now and it has never been anything short of amazing. He has resolved many longstanding issues with my joints (partially my fault) and helped me recover from acute injuries (definitely my fault).

He is polite, and respectful while also being funny and engaging. I have recommended him to several friends, and would do it again given the chance.”

We got a sense of Dr. David White’s legitimacy when we saw the teams and organisations he has worked with over the years. Aside from being a current team physician for a couple of ice hockey teams, he was also in the medical team for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Dr. White specialises in sports medicine services, most notably ultrasound-guided injections for osteoarthritis, tendinopathies and bursitis. These services are usually dreaded but with Dr. White’s expertise, some patients have noted how painless their injections were.

We also appreciate how Dr. White offers a wide array of movement-based therapies to help athletes regain their strength after suffering from a nasty injury. Furthermore, he can tailor the rehabilitation plans based on the patient’s need for a more speedy recovery.

The only downside to scheduling an appointment with Dr. White is the pricey rates. However, with his resume and expertise, we can say that his services are worth every single penny.

Pros

  • Offers a wide array of sports medicine services
  • Offers tailor-made rehabilitation plans
  • Features a well-maintained clinic, equipped with state-of-the-art equipment
  • Works for multiple national sports teams

Cons

Exceptionally skilled

“For over six years I have been a patient at Optimize Sports Medicine. My appointments are on time which is greatly appreciated as my son takes time from work to drive me.

Dr. David White is exceptionally skilled at giving painless cortisone injections, he makes the experience an anxiety-free one. He and the administrative staff are professional and friendly.

Thanks to Nancy for always responding with warmth and patience to my requests for appointments/rescheduling requests so promptly.

My knee feels better than it has for 20 years

“I had an appointment with Dr White.- to deal with my chronic knee issue. I had to decide whether knee replacement was my only option. He discussed the options with me and proposed an alternate solution that was viable.

The treatment he gave me last Thursday was a great success from my perspective. My knee feels better than it has for 20 years. I was able to resume my golf activity and continue it without pain thanks to his treatment.”

  • Friday: 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM

Dr. Renata Frankovich was one of our first picks when we were starting this list mainly because of her experience. For starters, she was a core part of multiple medical teams for several Olympics as well as the National Figure Skating Championships.

Furthermore, she’s been practicing this sports medicine for more than 20 years so if there’s someone eligible to diagnose and treat an injury, it would be her. Plus, she also spends her extra time as an assistant professor for medical education at the University of Ottawa.

Accolades aside, we also wanted to include Dr. Frankovich because of her expert diagnostic and treatment skills.

We’ve interviewed some of her past patients and they’ve highlighted how she immediately understood their injuries. Then, she instantly recommended a specific therapy session with one of the clinic’s physiotherapists.

As for its downsides, the main one we could think of is its limited operating hours, being closed during the weekends. Furthermore, do expect long waiting times, as Dr. Frankovich is almost always fully booked, which on the bright side, is a testament to her skill and experience.

Pros

  • Has been part of medical teams for several sporting events including multiple Olympics
  • An assistant Professor at the University of Ottawa
  • 20+ years of experience
  • Covered by OHIP

Cons

  • Long waiting times
  • Closed on weekends

I would highly recommend this clinic to anyone

“After a consult, Dr. Frankovich referred me to do physio for my Achilles and calf injury with Francine. I was sceptical as I had already been doing months of physio elsewhere, had stopped running for over 6 months and had felt no real improvement.

I had all but given up on running again. Instead of focusing on managing my symptoms, Francine focused on helping me identify and resolve the root cause of my injuries.

She pushed me to gain functional strength that would help me prevent future injuries, and gave me the tools to build back to running.

I ran 5 times in the last week, pain-free! Thank you so much, Francine. I would highly recommend this clinic to anyone.”

Super friendly and helpful

“All of the staff at Medsport are super friendly and helpful. Dr. Frankovich and Brooke McNight have been punctual, and caring and really take the time to listen to any concerns I have.

The care I have received from them is exceptional and I am eternally grateful to them for the increased quality of life I am experiencing because of their care”

Dr. Jon Steen is the clinic director of Fortis Spine & Sport, a clinic that we were aware of long before making this list because of its wide array of therapies. However, we only discovered Dr. Steen during our research as we’ve heard nothing but good words from his previous clients.

The only problem with this doctor is that his clinic is only open during the weekdays.

I was amazed by his depth of knowledge

“I cannot express enough how grateful I am to have discovered Fortis Spine & Sport and experienced the incredible care provided by Dr. Jon. From the moment I stepped into the clinic, I felt welcomed and valued as a patient.

Dr. Jon’s expertise and practical, science-backed approach to chiropractic care truly sets Fortis Spine & Sport apart. Unlike other clinics, Dr. Jon focuses on long-term relief from pain rather than just providing short-term solutions.

The staff at Fortis Spine & Sport are also exceptional, providing a warm and supportive environment that enhances the healing process.

From scheduling appointments to answering any questions I had, they were always professional and courteous, ensuring a seamless and pleasant experience.

In conclusion, I cannot recommend Fortis Spine & Sport and Dr. Jon highly enough. If you’re seeking effective, science-backed chiropractic care that delivers long-term results, look no further than Fortis Spine & Sport.

Very happy with the approach and attention to detail

“I can finally say I’m making progress from my back/hip injury. Very happy with the approach and attention to detail Dr Jon Steen has provided me with. I strongly recommend Fortis to anyone out there with any sports-related injuries.

I thought running was no longer possible but here I am writing a review. I also want to say that I am always greeted with a smile from reception for all my appointments.”
