Shoot your shot at the best shooting ranges in Ottawa

shooting-ranges-ottawa

Did you know that the earliest gun prototypes trace back to 10th-century China? These primitive firearms consisted of bamboo tubes filled with gunpowder and loaded with spears akin to today’s bullets.

In Ottawa, where firearms are federally regulated, marksmanship enthusiasts can still practice at local shooting ranges using many gun types (no bamboo ones though!).

Shooting ranges in Ottawa range from members-only to open-for-all ranges, and some have specific lanes for licensed and unlicensed shooters. If you want to try shooting as a hobby, here are the best places to try it!

Stittsville Shooting Range

Address: 7265 Fernbank Rd, Stittsville, ON K2S 1B6, Canada

Operating Hours: Wednesday to Friday, 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm, Saturday to Sunday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm

Website

Stittsville Shooting Range has been around since 1970, making it one of the oldest standing ranges in Ottawa. The range has three 25-yard lanes, one 200-yard rifle lane, and one 270-yard dynamic pistol lane.

They also have 50, 100, and 300-yard rifle and shotgun lanes with both regular and prone benches as well as a skeet and trap combination field. Currently, Stittsville Shooting Range offers skeet shooting lessons with NSSA shooter Dean Herzberg.

Shooting packages range from clay pigeon and shotgun shooting, three pistol shooting, and four pistol shooting if you’re unlicensed or a beginner. License holders are free to use any of their lanes upon applying for a membership, starting at $250.

Tips:

Unlicensed shooting packages at Stittsville Shooting Range are only available from May to October. Every unlicensed shooter will be accompanied by a licensed coach, and will not be allowed to shoot unless instructed.

Memberships can only be bought in the range. Online registration is currently unavailable, but if you have questions, you can contact the range via phone.

Connaught Range

From stoicconditioning.connor

Address: 9 Bisley Blvd #7, Nepean, ON K2K 2W6, Canada

Operating Hours: Hours vary depending on the booking

Website

Connaught Range is located within the headquarters of the National Capital Region Rifle Association at Nepean. The shooting range is a training ground for members of the NCRRA, so the lanes here are state-of-the-art.

By that, we mean Connaught Range features grass ranges with target shooting lanes of up to 900 meters (one of the longest lanes in all of Canada) and six pistol lanes ranging from 25 to 50 meters.

Membership in the club is pretty competitive, as they only accept a handful of new members per year. For members below the age of 25, annual dues amount to $90, plus other fees related to the type of shooting you’re interested in.

Tips:

Since Connaught Range is operated by the Department of National Defence, any licensed shooter without an Authorization to Transport Restricted Firearms permit cannot bring their handguns and firearms to the range.

Applications for the permit can be submitted through email here.

Note that the ATT permit for federal military ranges is different from the ATT permit for civilian ranges. You’ll need to secure the former if you want to bring your own firearms to Connaught Range even if you already own a civilian ATT permit.

RA Centre is a hub for all things sports and recreational activities, but avid Ottawa shooters know that within the multi-sports centre is the RA Gun Club. It’s the only gun club that has an indoor shooting range in Ottawa, so you can shoot rain or shine!

The club currently offers two monthly courses, namely the Canadian Firearms Safety Course and the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course. Both courses are offered for members who don’t yet have a firearms license and wish to gain one!

The range also offers a variety of firearms, plus eye and ear gear, that you can use to shoot at no extra charge. You’ll only have to pay for your membership dues, ammunition, and targets at the range during your visit!

Tips:

The RA Centre’s Gun Club is open for beginner and avid shooters, but they also offer a special event just for women members of the club.

The Women’s Day on the Range event usually happens on a Saturday, but dates are subject to change based on the availability of the range.

Fees start at $40 per shooter, which comes with safety training and one-on-one mentoring. You can check out more updates about the event here

Distance from OT: 40 minutes

Operating Hours: Monday to Sunday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm

The Eastern Ontario Shooting Club was known as the Eastern Ontario Handgun Club in the 1980s before it was rebranded in 2010. They’re a members-only club, so getting a membership is a must before you can shoot here!

If you know someone who’s a member already, however, you can drop by and shoot in their lanes as long as a member is with you. As a member, you get access to their seven bays, one rifle range, and three pistol lanes.

If you sign up as a Cowboy Action Shooting member, you can shoot at the 50-yard rifle range with your restricted and non-restricted shotguns, rifles, and handguns. Shooting sessions are only held outdoors, so dress appropriately for the weather!

Tips:

The Eastern Ontario Shooting Club only accepts new members between September and March each year, so applications for the waitlist are a must before these months.

Once your application is shortlisted, you’ll receive an invitation to their New Member Orientation!

Family memberships are also offered at the range for current members who have spouses and children between 15 and 21 years old who wish to pick up shooting as a hobby.

In The Air Guild

Address: 1940 Bank St, Ottawa, ON K1V 7Z8, Canada

Operating Hours: Monday to Friday, 1:00 pm to 11:00 pm, Saturday, 12:00 pm to 11:00 pm

If you’re looking for an alternative to shooting firearms that feels like the same thing, keep an eye out for In The Air Guild and their shooting range. The guild is actually an entertainment lounge that features knife and axe throwing as well as BB shooting.

BB guns are air guns that shoot metallic ball-bearing pellets instead of bullets. The firearms you’ll use here look and feel like real guns; it’s only the pellets that differ between the two.

In The Air’s BB shooting range offers rifles, revolvers, colts, and more, and requires no licenses or reservations. It’s a generally safer alternative for children below 15 years old, so if you love shooting with your kids, you can take them to this place!

Tips:

Returning guests at In The Air Guild get a 20% discount on sessions if they come for a second time and post a review on the range’s Google page. The promo only applies to the session but not ammunition.

In The Air also offers monthly and annual guild memberships starting at $19.95 per month and $199.95 per year.

Address: 5431 Greenbush Rd, Brockville, ON K6V 5T4, Canada

Distance from OT: 90 minutes

Contact Details: +16138539677

Website

Established in 1968 by local sportsmen, The Golden Triangle Trap and Skeet Club draws gun enthusiasts from Eastern Ontario. Situated in Brockville, it’s a bit of a drive from Ottawa but worth it for skeet enthusiasts.

As a shotgun-only skeet and trap club, they don’t permit rifles or pistols, nor do they provide facilities for these types of firearms. Their focus is on offering services such as American skeet, 16-yard singles trap, wobble skeet, and sporting clay.

Membership rates start at $140 per year, and the rate already includes membership in the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters. If you’re not a member yet, they’ll still let you in to shoot, but you must tell them in advance via phone!

Tips:

American skeet and wobble skeet shooting at Golden Triangle Trap and Skeet Club is available all year, but their shoot trap and 5-stand sporting clay services are only available in the spring, summer, and fall.

You’ll have to bring your own firearms to the range, as they don’t have any guns for rent. However, if you’re dropping by with a big group, the range can assist you with looking for third-party firearms providers.
